SON OF MAN, YOU CANNOT SAY.

‘Son of Man, You Cannot Say’ uses the photographic medium to draw specific attention to the boundaries of modes of communication. The prints are hung in a six by three grid, with each representing one of the twelve syllables that form the phrase:
‘YOU KNOW ONLY A HEAP OF BROKEN IMAGES’
Borrowed from T.S Eliot’s ‘Burial of the Dead’, the phrase implicates an intended dialogue. The systems we use to navigate the world result betray their content, leaving it fragmented and discontinuous. ‘Son of Man, You Cannot Say’ seeks to puts two fundamental communication structures at odds, speech and image. It utilises the implicit qualities of one, to illustrate the limitations of the other.
