‘Jumble’ (2021) and ‘Miscellaneous frog sculptures’ play with the meme character Pepe the Frog, a motif used across communities from the alt-right to gamers and streamers. Pepe’s broad applicability provides hate speech plausible deniabilit for offensive rhetoric, often defended for simply being ‘dark’ or ‘edgy’ internet humour.
His popular status allows the alt-right to articulate their messaging through memes and popular culture that easily go unnoticed or unchallenged, making frogs function as a stand in for this plausible deniability within Lexi’s practice.
